Past Perfect Tense (had + V3)

ഭൂതകാലത്ത് (past) നടന്ന ഒരു സംഭവത്തിന്‍െറ മുമ്പേ നടന്ന മറ്റൊരു സംഭവം പറയാനാണ് Past Perfect Tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.

രവി റെയില്‍വേ സ്റ്റേഷനില്‍ എത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ തീവണ്ടി
പുറപ്പെട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ‘റെയില്‍വേ സ്റ്റേഷനില്‍ എത്തി’ എന്ന ഭൂതകാല
സംഭവത്തിനു മുമ്പാണ് ട്രെയിന്‍ പുറപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന സംഭവം നടക്കുന്നത്.

1. When Ravi reached the railway station the train had started.

2. When I got home late at night everybody had gone to bed.

3. The rain had stopped when the players came.

4. After I had eaten my dinner I watched the TV programme.

5. Before the minister came, the audience had occupied their seats.

6. As soon as we had entered the theatre, they closed the ticket sale.

മുമ്പ് പൂര്‍ത്തീകരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതിരുന്ന ആഗ്രഹം (unfulfilled condition) പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കാനും Past Perfect Tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

ഉദാഹരണം:

1. I wish Priya had not gone. (but she went).

2. I would rather she had studied (but she didn’t)

3. If only my son had taken me to hospital (but he did not)

പൂര്‍ത്തീകരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതിരുന്ന ഒരവവസ്ഥ പ്രകടമാക്കാനും Past Perfect Tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

ഉദാ: If you had studied well, you would have passed.

നീ നന്നായി പഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ പാസാകുമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ, നീ പഠിച്ചിട്ടില്ലാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് പാസായതുമില്ല.

ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതത്തില്‍നിന്ന് ഇത്തരം ധാരാളം ഉദാഹരണങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ടെത്താം.

If my uncle had come to my birthday party, I would have got many beautiful gifts.

(അമ്മാവന്‍ വന്നിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ എനിക്ക് ധാരാളം മനോഹരമായ
സമ്മാനങ്ങള്‍ കിട്ടുമായിരുന്നു). അമ്മാവന്‍ വന്നില്ലാത്തതുകൊണ്ട്
സമ്മാനങ്ങള്‍ കിട്ടിയതുമില്ല എന്നാണ് ആശയം?

Past Perfect Tense is used with a time phrase:

ഉദാ: At 5o, clock the bus had arrived.

At the age of 18 Hashim had studied the Holy Quran byheart.

കൂടാതെ till, before, since, already എന്നിവയോടൊപ്പവും ഈ tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

ഉദാ: They had not called me till yesterday

We had not met Oommen Chandy since his assumption of office as Chief Minister.

The chiefguest had already arrived there.

The new minister had never visited the capital city of Delhi.

ഭൂതകാലത്ത് ഒരു നിര്‍ണിത സമയത്തിനു മുമ്പു നടന്ന ഒരു പ്രവൃത്തി പറയുന്നതിനും Past Perfect Tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

ഉദാ: They had studied the lesson before night yesterday,

The Construction of the new school building had been completed before 31th March.

He had been to the police station before 8.00 A.മ
